Originating from India, Masala Chai (/məˈsɑːlə tʃaɪ/; lit. 'mixed-spice tea') gets its name from "masala" - meaning a blend of spices. While countless variations exist, traditional recipes share certain foundational spices. When prepared with milk, this nourishing tea supports bodily tissues and helps relieve Vata-type cold symptoms. Discover your Ayurvedic constitution by taking our dosha test.

The milk in the Masala Chai helps stabilize emotions, calm nervous agitation, and harmonize all three doshas. Though considered a sattvic (pure) food, milk's inherently heavy qualities demand strong agni (digestive fire) for proper breakdown and absorption.

Ayurveda recommends several techniques to enhance milk's digestibility. Boiling - which imbues the milk with fire's transformative energy - helps counteract its heavy nature. The strategic use of spices further aids assimilation. This recipe thoughtfully combines all these approaches for maximum benefit.

Masala Chai ingredients

  • 1 tsp dried ginger powder;
  • 1 tsp cinnamon pieces;
  • 7 whole cloves;
  • 9 green cardamom pods (lightly crushed);
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder;
  • 750 ml (3 cups) filtered water;
  • 250 ml (1 cup) whole milk.

Preparation method

  1. Combine all spices with water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer uncovered for 10 minutes to create a strong decoction.
  2. Add milk and return to a gentle boil, allowing the flavors to meld.
  3. Immediately remove from heat when the mixture begins rising.

Strain through a fine mesh sieve and enjoy warm (not piping hot) for optimal digestion and flavor.
